SCHEDULE OF EVENTS FOR JUNE 2008 BOONE FAMILY REUNION Following is the preliminary schedule of events (subject to change): Wednesday, June 18:
Thursday, June 19:
Friday, June 20:
Saturday, June 21:
Sunday, June 22: The Cumberland Gap … Optional extended trip of the 2008 ReunionFor those who have the time, a couple of extra days (Sunday and Monday, June 22-23) are added to the reunion. We plan to visit the Cumberland Gap and surrounding area following the regular 2008 biennial reunion in Kentucky. Committee members, Karen Kastning 540/639-4666, karen@skyhopper.net, and Jayme Nash at tntx47@msn.com. They will help you coordinate ride-sharing in personal cars, if you are interested. It is about a 2 1/2 hour trip from the Campbell House to the Gap. Some recommended places to visit are: There is a small museum and book and gift shop, the Southern Highlands Craft Guild shop (high quality artisan crafts), and two films in the theater: "Daniel Boone: The Westward Movement"--25 minutes in length, shown on the hour, and A drive up to the Pinnacle Overlook after the visitor center should be great. Weather can be a problem, but even in rain there is a good view. There are a couple of nice, mid-range price motels in the area if you want to stay over Sunday night. Monday morning visit Abraham Lincoln Museum on campus of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN, (only 3 1/2 miles from the Gap.) Head into VA on US58. The Wilderness Road State Park is about 12 miles from the Park. Staying east on US58 for 1.2 miles will bring us to the turnoff for the James Boone Pioneer Graves marker. From the marker we can go back to Wilderness Road State Park, which has the restored Martin's Station Fort, and see an 18-minute film "Wilderness Road: Spirit of a Nation." Visitor Center is open 10-5pm. It is suggested this would be a good place for a picnic lunch. (By the way, the artist David Wright has also done a painting of Martin's Station, though it isn't as large as his mural at the Park headquarters). We should be able to finish by early afternoon and head back to Lexington or folks who have their cars may get on their way home. Those traveling by air will want to make hotel reservations for Monday night in Lexington and plan their return air travel for Tuesday. Please let Karen or Jamye know if you plan to visit the Gap. |
