"Col. Daniel Boone print", by artist David Wright.
For all his fame, Daniel Boones likeness was captured on canvas only once during his lifetime. Harding later made a full-length portrait of Boone, and James Otto Lewis of St. Louis completed an engraving of that painting a few days after Boones death. It was the earliest known print made west of the Mississippi. According to Wright, "The Col. Daniel Boone print (copy of Chester Harding's original done in 1820) is a limited edition of 392 prints. Each print is numbered, and is the same size as the original, 10"x15." It was printed on an antique 1820s platen press and then hand water colored as were some of the originals. "Only four copies of the 1820 print are known to exist, and I have examined each of them," says Wright. Author Ted Franklin Belue and Artist David Wright knew the Harding-Lewis engraving was too precious to ignore, so in cooperation with the Missouri Historical Society, they recreated this landmark work. Wright will donate to the Boone Society 20% of proceeds from purchases of these prints by Society members.
